What is psychology?
Psychology is the scientific study of how people think, act, and react at an individual, group, organisational and community level. Psychologists apply this knowledge to assess, diagnose, prevent, and treat problems. They develop theories and test them, thus providing new information that adds to the body of established knowledge.
Why study psychology?
Psychology is an important field of study because of its applicability to diverse contexts. A person’s psychological well being encompasses their physical health, cognitive functioning, interpersonal relationships, emotions and behaviour. Psychological knowledge and insight is therefore relevant to many other professions because of the growing recognition that taking care of people on a psychological level improves their personal and professional relationships and activities.
Where do psychologists work?
Psychologists specialize in a host of different areas within the field and identify themselves by many different labels. Some psychologists concentrate on research, while others focus on practical applications of psychological principles. The most common specialty areas in psychology include clinical and counselling psychology, educational psychology, organisational psychology, social psychology, health and sports psychology.
Some psychologists work independently whilst others team up with other professionals such as psychiatrists, doctors, social workers, teachers, policymakers and managers to contribute to different areas of society. Additionally, many psychologists teach in academic institutions and graduate courses in universities.
