Warranting of Psychologists

The Maltese Psychological Association (MPA) congratulates the Malta Psychology Profession Board (MPPB) on its completion of the warranting process for qualified psychologists in various fields. This is the direct outcome of the Psychology Profession Act of 2004 which now regulates the profession in Malta.

MPA has been at the forefront of promoting regulation of the profession, often voicing its concern that persons might use the title ‘Psychologist’ even though their qualifications were inadequate or their training incomplete. The warranting process is a major step in the protection of the public and the profession itself from such abuses. MPA hopes that clients of professional services offered by psychologists will now be in a better position to address cases of malpractice should the need arise.

The public is now assured that practitioners making use of the title ‘Psychologist’ have fulfilled the professional training requirements as specified by the Psychology Profession Act (2004). These are in line with current training standards in several European countries.

Finally we augur that the MPPB will continue to work towards the development of clear practice guidelines that are sensitive to the socio-cultural realties of the Maltese people.
